2027
3rd to 13th September - 6 spaces remaining

Ranked among the world’s top ten “mega-diversity” nations, Brazil offers extraordinary wildlife experiences, and this photography tour takes you deep into both the Northern and Southern Pantanal. Together, these vast regions form an ever-changing mosaic of backwaters, oxbow lakes, winding rivers, gallery forests, and forested islands, creating one of South America’s most visually striking natural landscapes.

The Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland on Earth and supports some of the highest wildlife concentrations on the continent. Exploring both the northern and southern reaches reveals the full breadth of Brazil’s biodiversity, from rich birdlife to an impressive array of mammals and reptiles. While countless species provide outstanding photographic opportunities, one animal reigns supreme—the jaguar. With four full days devoted to boat-based excursions in prime jaguar habitat, this journey offers exceptional opportunities to observe and photograph these powerful, water-loving predators at close range.

Day 1: Arrive in Campo Grande
After your domestic flight to Campo Grande, we will be collected by our guide and taken to our Hotel in Bonito. In the afternoon we will search for giant and lesser anteaters.

Day 2: Morning and afternoon at the Buraco das Araras (sinkhole)

After breakfast at Hotel Olho d’Água, we set out with our Brazilian guide for a full day focused on one of the region’s most spectacular natural features. A short drive brings us to a massive sinkhole, where sheer limestone walls shelter one of the Pantanal’s most vibrant wildlife scenes.

Both morning and afternoon are spent photographing Green and Red Macaws as they gather at the sinkhole, offering exceptional opportunities to capture these colorful parrots in flight and at rest. The dramatic setting, combined with constant activity, makes this one of the most rewarding bird photography locations of the journey.

Lunch is served near the sinkhole, allowing us to remain close to the action before returning for additional photography later in the day.

Day 3: Bonito to Aquidauana

Departing Bonito in the morning, we travel toward Pousada Aguapé, keeping a close watch for Giant Anteaters along the route. This region offers excellent roadside wildlife viewing, and the open landscapes provide strong opportunities to spot these remarkable mammals as they move through the grasslands.

After arriving and settling in, the afternoon is dedicated to searching for Lesser Anteaters and other wildlife around the lodge. This slower-paced exploration allows time to observe behavior and work carefully with light, making it an ideal session for both observation and photography.

Day 4: Full day searching for anteaters

Morning and afternoon are spent actively searching for both Giant and Lesser Anteaters, along with a wide variety of other mammal and bird species that inhabit this diverse region of the Pantanal. Working slowly through open grasslands, gallery forests, and wetland edges allows time to observe behavior and take advantage of changing light conditions throughout the day.

While anteaters are the primary focus, the area supports a rich assortment of wildlife. Mammal sightings may include capybara, marsh deer, tapirs, and armadillos, while birdlife is abundant and varied. Species commonly encountered include raptors, herons, storks, parrots, and numerous passerines, offering excellent opportunities for both wildlife observation and photography.

Day 5: Aquidauana to Porto Jofre

After one final short game drive, we return to Pousada Aguapé for breakfast before continuing by road to our charter flight bound for Porto Jofre.

Upon arrival, we check in and enjoy lunch before heading out on our first boat excursion along the rivers in search of jaguars. This initial outing introduces us to prime jaguar habitat and offers our first opportunity to observe these iconic predators in the wild.

Day 6 to 10: Jaguars time!

From Days 6 through 10, our focus is on full-day boat excursions along the rivers of the Pantanal, with jaguar photography as our primary objective. Traveling by motorboat allows us to cover extensive stretches of river and position ourselves for optimal viewing and photographic opportunities.

While jaguars are the main priority, the waterways support an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. Daily sightings often include caiman, capybara, families of Giant River Otters, and an impressive variety of birdlife, making each day rich with photographic possibilities beyond the big cats.

Day 11: Departure
After breakfast we check-out and start our way back on the Transpantaneira road towards Cuiaba. We normally arrive in Cuiaba around 8am - 10 am depending on flight times. However if you have an early flight to catch, we can arrange for an early transport to the airport.
